Jeremie Frimpong injury update ahead of Newcastle

Updated: Aug 30

A fresh update on Jeremie Frimpong’s injury has emerged ahead of Newcastle.

The 25-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during his Premier League debut against Bournemouth.

Manager Arne Slot revealed Frimpong felt discomfort in his hamstring around halftime, prompting a precautionary substitution to avoid worsening the injury, especially with fellow right-back Conor Bradley also sidelined with a hamstring problem of his own.

Speaking out after the win over the Cherries, Slot said:

“It wasn’t out of luxury,” the Dutchman said. “Jeremie Frimpong felt his hamstring at half-time and made a lot of sprints.”

“He was doing quite well, but our other full-back, Conor Bradley, is already injured with a hamstring injury, so you don’t to take the risk of losing another full-back.”

“You could argue, why don’t you play Joe Gomez there, but he only had two sessions in pre-season and could only play half an hour.”

Now Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail has reported that the Dutch defender is in a “race against time” to feature at St James’ Park on Monday, casting doubt on his availability for the clash:

“Jeremie Frimpong is in a race against time to be passed fit for Liverpool’s trip to Monday after feeling discomfort in his hamstring.”

“The full extent of the injury is not yet known but it is fair to say he is a doubt for the Newcastle clash, with Liverpool also hosting Arsenal six days after their trip to St James’ Park.”

Wataru Endo came on to replace Frimpong against Bournemouth, but he did not look that assured in the role.

Joe Gomez may yet be able to feature against the Magpies next week, but he’s recovering from an Achilles heel issue himself and has played very little competitive minutes this year.
