Florian Wirtz’s Germany exited the World Cup at the Round of 32 stage as they were beaten by Paraguay on penalties.
The Liverpool No.7 featured for 110 minutes of Monday’s tie in Boston, where the two teams played out a 1-1 draw after both normal and extra-time.
Paraguay had broken the deadlock via Julio Enciso’s header shortly ahead of the half-time break.
However, the game was levelled in the 54th minute with the help of Wirtz as his flighted delivery from deep into the area saw Kai Havertz respond with a header of his own.
In extra-time, Jonathan Tah’s goal at a Germany corner ball was ruled out by VAR, meaning penalties were needed to find a winner.
Paraguay claimed a 4-3 victory in a back-and-forth shootout to take the place in the last 16.
