Alexis Mac Allister provided an assist and later scored a penalty in the shootout, helping Argentina advance to the Copa America semi-finals overnight.
The Liverpool midfielder played a pivotal role in his nation's quarter-final clash with Ecuador in Houston, Texas, which concluded in a 1-1 draw.
Lisandro Martinez put Argentina ahead in the first half, converting at the back post after Mac Allister redirected a corner from the right flank.
However, following Enner Valencia's missed penalty for Ecuador that struck the woodwork, Ecuador found an equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time through Kevin Rodriguez.
Mac Allister stepped up during the shootout, confidently converting from 12 yards out, leading Argentina to a 4-2 victory.
The defending world champions are set to face either Venezuela or Canada in the semi-finals, with the match scheduled for the early hours of Wednesday morning.
