Joel Matip, now a free agent following his departure from Liverpool, has garnered interest from Xabi Alonso's team. Despite speculation about retirement, it appears there's a potential move on the horizon for him.
Matip, having concluded an eight-year tenure at Anfield with the expiration of his contract, is now considering various opportunities.
His recovery from an ACL injury since December introduces a level of risk for any club interested in signing him, as he is yet to complete his rehabilitation.
Sky journalist Patrick Berger reports that Bayer Leverkusen has expressed interest in the 32-year-old defender, and discussions with his agents have reportedly taken place.
Earlier reports in July by Africafoot also mentioned negotiations for a two-year deal with Leverkusen, who are anticipating Jonathan Tah's departure.
Leverkusen, coming off a historic 51-game unbeaten streak and a German cup double last season, is looking to recruit an experienced central defender.
Mats Hummels, another seasoned player whose contract with Borussia Dortmund has ended, is also on Leverkusen's radar.
For Matip, a move to Leverkusen would be significant, aligning with Alonso's search for experience. Matip's career includes over 400 senior appearances with Liverpool and Schalke, along with an impressive collection of trophies.
He can also boast extensive experience in the Bundesliga, having emerged from Schalke's youth system, as well as Champions League experience ahead of Leverkusen's return to the competition.
It may be a somewhat unexpected path for the 32-year-old, but it is well-deserved, given that he has proven to be one of Liverpool's most valuable free transfers.
He still has much to contribute at the highest level, and Alonso would be fortunate to have him on board.
