Florian Wirtz assists as Germany start World Cup with 7-1 win

Florian Wirtz gave an assist as Germany began their World Cup campaign with a 7-1 victory over Curacao on Sunday.

The Liverpool No.7 played a key role in his country’s opening goal of the tournament, just six minutes into the Group E fixture in Houston.

Wirtz – who featured for the full game – was the assister to goalscorer Felix Nmecha with a deft pass as the pair completed a sweet one-two.

Livano Comenencia brought Curacao level midway through the first half but a Nico Schlotterbeck header and a Kai Havertz penalty put Germany two clear by the interval.

Jamal Musiala’s low finish supplied a fourth for Germany immediately after the restart and he was followed on the scoresheet by Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav.

Havertz’s second strike of the day wrapped up the scoring towards the end.

Germany’s next match at the World Cup is against Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday (June 20).
