Dominik Szoboszlai struggled throughout his historic appearance as captain in Hungary's 3-1 defeat to Switzerland, yet he still provided a remarkable assist.
At the age of 23 years, seven months, and 21 days, Szoboszlai became the youngest player to captain a team at the European Championship.
The Liverpool midfielder led Hungary in their Group A opener against Switzerland, having suffered only one loss in his previous 16 games since becoming captain in 2022.
He played in his usual attacking midfield position, supporting striker Barnabas Varga, but the £65 million acquisition from RB Leipzig was not at his best.
During a lackluster performance in Cologne, it was speculated that Szoboszlai was still affected by an injury incurred in the final warm-up match against Israel.
Nevertheless, he managed to provide a brilliant assist as Hungary attempted a comeback after trailing 2-0 at the break.
Szoboszlai, receiving the ball on the left wing, cut inside to his stronger right foot and delivered a cross into the six-yard box, which Varga headed home.
Regrettably, that goal did not lead to a significant comeback, and Breel Embolo's late goal added to first-half scores from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer, securing the win for Switzerland.
According to FotMob stats, Szoboszlai was one of Hungary's standout players, creating the most chances for his team (two) and winning all four of his ground duels.
However, the eye test suggested otherwise, as the 23-year-old carried over his disappointing end-of-season form from Liverpool to the Euros.
After losing their first match, Hungary now faces a challenge to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.
In other Group A news, host nation Germany defeated Andy Robertson's Scotland 5-1 on Friday night, positioning them as favorites to advance alongside Switzerland.
Hungary's next match is against Germany on Wednesday.
