Caoimhin Kelleher has confirmed his ambition to be a first-choice goalkeeper, whether it be at Liverpool or elsewhere

Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher has acknowledged the possibility of leaving Liverpool to achieve his goal of becoming a first-choice goalkeeper.

The 25-year-old had a significant season with the Reds' first team last year, stepping up after Alisson Becker's hamstring injury.

Kelleher played in 26 matches across all competitions for the Merseyside team, surpassing his total appearances from the previous four seasons. With Gavin Bazunu of Southampton sidelined due to injury, Kelleher is poised for a longer stint as Ireland's goalkeeper.

With Arne Slot taking over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, the starting spot might be contested. However, Alisson's consistent excellence suggests he will retain the position for now.

The esteemed Brazilian's contract has three years remaining, leading Kelleher to concede that his chances for regular first-team play might be scarce.

Linked with a transfer to Glasgow Celtic, where former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly seeking a successor for Joe Hart, Kelleher, in an interview with The Athletic, has signaled openness to leaving Anfield.

"It would be ideal to achieve that at Liverpool, but I'm realistic," he commented on the prospect of being Liverpool's number one.

"Aware that Ali has been top in the world for years, I've cherished my incredible journey at Liverpool. I adore the club, the fans, and have strong bonds with the players and staff."

"Whether it's at Liverpool or elsewhere, I believe becoming a No 1 is the next step for me."

Kelleher, with 12 international caps, is expected to increase his count in the upcoming friendlies against Hungary and Portugal.
