Arne Slot has paid tribute to Matt Beard following the sudden passing of the former Liverpool FC Women manager on Saturday evening.

Beard had two highly successful spells with the Reds’ women’s team, securing back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014 and leading them back to the top flight as Championship champions in 2022.
“My reaction was one of grief,” Slot told Liverpoolfc.com. “I met him last season, and he not only achieved great things for this football club and the women’s team—back-to-back league titles—but also returned to the team when they were playing in a lower division, which shows how much he loved the club.

“Hearing something like this, I think he was 47 if I’m correct—that’s my age too—it’s devastating news.”
News of Beard’s passing has brought an outpouring of grief and condolences across the football world, reflecting his significant impact on the women’s game.
His personal qualities have also been praised by those who had the privilege of working with him throughout his career.
Slot added: “In these moments, the football world always shows its best side, and that’s exactly what’s happened now. He’s received immense respect, not just here at Liverpool but all around women’s football.
“I’ve heard and seen the respect Arsenal fans showed him, which highlights the impact he had on the game. But beyond football, I think the Melwood staff and everyone who worked with him admired him so much—and that’s an even greater legacy than the trophies you win.
“Who you are as a person always matters more than what you’ve won. But in his case, he combined both—he was a hugely successful manager and a wonderful human being.”
